Live Well: Overcoming Depression and Anxiety

Where:   Ankeny YMCA (1102 N Ankeny Blvd, Ankeny, IA 50023)

When:   Thursday evenings, starting September 14th for orientation and subsequent Thursdays through November 8th, 6:30 – 8 pm.

Cost:   $5 person

Who: These groups will be facilitated by a team of health professionals and educators.

The class material was based research done by Dr. Steven Iliardi, a psychologist at the University of Kansas.  The Anxiety portion was developed in consultation with Dr. Iliardi by Charlotte McCloskey.  Participants in the course begin each week in the combined group to learn how spiritual health is related to both depression and anxiety, then the two groups meet separately.

Healthy lifestyle behaviors are stressed for both the depression–related group and the anxiety-related group. Each week during the 8-week course a new behavior and corresponding goal is introduced.  The specific behaviors vary, depending on which section of the course the participant chooses.  (See the attached schedule of topics) This system incorporates self-assessment and group accountability as well.  The atmosphere is informal, non-threatening and supportive.  Please refer to the attached schedules for detailed topics.
